The 5 little points of Tajweed

August 20th, 2009 by Waleed

Note from listening to Wisam Sharrief-

Keep these 5 points in mind when you recite Quran:

  1. Letters can be heavy or light
  2. Letters live somewhere (throat, lips, mouth)
  3. This Cat Feels Awfully Cool
  4. What gets stretched & how much (north/south – east/west)
  5. Don’t bounce what don’t need to bounce

    salaams,

    I get 1,2,4 and 5 – but what does 3 mean..?

    “This Cat Feels Awfully Cool” – this phrase is to help us emulate the dammah, kasrah, fat’tah.

    Cat = Fat’tah
    Feels = Kasrah
    Cool = Dammah
    Awfully = the heavy letters.

    We were told to observe the way we said each word in normal (north american accent) language and to emulate similar sounds for fat’tah, kasrah & dammah.

    Please note that this is only for beginners – advanced students will clearly not need such aids and be reading/understanding directly from arabic. Also note that the pronunciation works for American English accents largely.

    And Allah (SWT) knows best.

    Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing. It’ll be useful to use these when teaching tajweed rules to kids.

    JazakAllaah khair.
