KK - we live next to a Baskin Robbins and I no longer take the Mrs when I go fill the gas...

Sophister - I was talking about myself actually! You just get so used to being ignorant that when you see the resources within yourself and around you that it just plain shocks you.

For example: education. I keep thinking, PhD, PhD, PhD...yet around me lie about 5 areas that I can easily read up and learn more about. I already own these books, or have access to these resources yet am seemingly blind to them! InshaAllah, no more. :)

You know, I read Tony Robbins as Baskin Robbins and, for a moment, my heart went aflutter . . . .

Are you eating enough ice-cream?

Adnan- NLP's basic premise is to study excellence and establish a framework for modeling that excellence within yourself. Its roots are in linguistics and psychology - and the explanation that I'm reviewing currently seems to make a lot of sense to me.

I'm very new into it but I'm thinking of writing more about it. The best way to learn, is by teaching or doing (interestingly, that is an NLP basic principle or presupposition as well).

There are differences in original NLP, what Tony Robbins does and New Code NLP. New Code takes the ecology of a system into account. So, you don't just focus on outcomes for yourself but rather of the entire system (e.g. family decisions, office outcomes, driving down the highway and deciding how to drive, etc.). That's a very powerful and healthy revision that matches my values and beliefs.

So, why am I learning NLP? Because we model excellence in our Islamic life (the sunnah) yet fail to do so in our "real life" - or rather, we fail to do follow the sunnah decently and fail to achieve our goals/outcomes in real life. I want to reach my goals and outcomes - wouldn't you?

NLP can help me. Already it has and my daily productivity has increased.

Sophister - NLP is geeky? ok. That is your belief :) I would rather be a smart geek then stay ignorant longer.

(Note: book I am currently reading is Joseph O'Connor - NLP Workbook, http://tinyurl.com/6r4nhy )

NLP has amazing potential for positive use in the materials/books/messages that are put out in the Islamic community through education/marketing, etc. It's Neuro-Linguistic Programming. look it up on Wikipedia.

(Hooray for wikipedia!)

I've always had a mild passing interest. But never actually got to doing any real reading on this. Any recommended books?

Also, my introduction to the term was through Derren Brown's particular insistence that his techniques are different from NLP. To which I thought, "What's NLP?".
But as it currently stand, I'm unaware of either Brown's techniques or NLP.

But the real question is... why?

why are you learning this?
