On ipods and invisibility
July 8th, 2006 byI wrote this prior to getting the ipod:
My nokia mobile phone is so old it ought to come with a rotary dial. This is my cell phone. Notice how they are even using a picture of an old couple to advertise the phone!!
(addendum: Warning to razr users; looking directly at the Nokia 6010 can cause nausea, headache and blurred vision.)
In brief, my “end call” button only occasionally works. There are times when I have to wait for the other person to hang up before the call can end. The number 3 is kind of jammed. I have to press it incredibly hard for it to work. Forget about trying to use the letter “e†or “f†in a SMS message. Despite sometimes being able to get the letter “dâ€, too much time usually passes before I can get it to change to an “e†on the second try. Hence I am often left with “dd†instead of an “eâ€.
Thus, I am hoping to get something like an ipod or digital camera to offset this phone. I realize people often get an ipod and stop using it after a fashion -even those most passionate about getting it. I guess it comes down to how well one can integrate technology into their life. For example, I once became so dependent upon my PalmPilot that when it fell and broke (and thereby losing my entire electronic schedule), I could no longer remember where my classes were and what I had due. (addendum: I still can’t remember where my classes are and what’s due.. Sometimes I even forget what my classes are.. hmm)
Nonetheless, I should point out, I will definitely use the ipod for non music often; e.g. lectures (academic and non), this.american.life (1.4 M), and other stuff. In fact, listen to the mp3 linked to this.american.life. Tell me that’s not good stuff.
With that in mind, if you could choose one and only one power; which would you choose: Flight or invisibility?
(For reference, listen to the mp3 above)

I have the same problem with my Nokia phone. During a call, you will the options menu of the bottom left your screen. Select it and from the list that appear you can choose “end call”.
oh yeah, and I would choose flight. Invisibility is over-rated.

haha. tariq beat me to it. guess there’s a lot of us out there. it’s a conspiracy to get us to waste minutes, i’m sure.
as far as that question. hard to decide. either way it’d be a lonely existance. flying seems more fun though. becoming invisible would only be good for either letting you listen in to others conversations or getting into places without being seen. and as the guy on there says, it’d be way too depressing to hear others yammer on and sneaking into movies alone would get boring eventually.

Want my Nokia 6800? T-Mobile gave it to me as an “upgrade” last year, but I hate the Nokia interface, so I’ve stuck with my old Sony-Ericsson phone.
Oh, and invisibility, of course. Flying might be fun for a bit, but if I really wanted to fly I’d get on a plane. Or stand on the bow of a ship.

Definitely invisibility.
I have the Sony Ericsson W800i which is great.
You can record on it, listen to music, do all the things that you can do with a normal phone!
With a 2GB memory stick in it, it’s sweet!

Tariq: heh interestingly the menu button doesn’t always work either. In my phone it is above the end call button. I think that whole area of the phone has had some damage.
noodlez: Don’t worry I am fairly conflicted about choosing as well.
Imad: I don’t text message that often. =/ And stay away from ship bows dude, lest you inadvertently reenact a scene from the Titanic.
nzm: Wow that’s a pretty cool phone! But I think the cost of buying a 2GB sony memory stick is probably as much as the phone itself. I don’t know why sony doesn’t follow an open standard with regards to memory..

Flight…but like superflight, were you fly ubber fast, yes, yes.
Invisibility.. I think I pull that off as is.
Also what phone service do you have? I got my motorola pebl for 65 bucks and it’s pure hotness

hemlock: Yeah that\’s kind of how I see it too; it seems really difficult to use flight for wrong. In other news, it also seems we both have self control issues. Fantastic.
monologist: For now it\’s tmobile. I\’ll probably be switching service plans. But as I told a friend, unless Motorola comes out with the brik or brck .. that pebl is totally going to inadvertently get skipped across the Hudson one stressful day.
